Which sporty crossover SUV best suits your lifestyle?
I need a vehicle that can make the transition between my professional life and my personal life. My professional life consists of music gigs, writing, and seasonal office jobs. At all times, I need to be ready to load up my harp and musical accessories, pick up supplies, or pack a few suitcases for a writer’s retreat. In my personal life, meanwhile, I love to travel — road tripping to state parks and campsites across the United States with friends. That’s why I take a look at the 2022 Chevy Trax vs 2022 Ford EcoSport.
A sedan or coupe can’t fit everything I need, but a full-size SUV is too big and cumbersome to drive. I need something covered, unlike a van, to keep my harp in an air conditioned space. An affordable crossover like the Trax or EcoSport should do the trick.
Although the 2022 Chevy Trax and the 2022 Ford EcoSport are both considered sporty crossover SUVs, they are not the same vehicle at all. Depending on what you are looking for, you may be attracted to one or the other. I’ll tell you what I find interesting about each of them and leave the decision up to you.
A similar surface
First, I’m drawn to the Trax and EcoSport because they’re both compact. I’m a short person and need something small enough to handle, but big enough to hold all the supplies I need for work or vacation. If I have two or three colleagues or friends accompanying me to a certain event or activity (which is common), I need space for four people and all our equipment, tools and toys. A car is not enough.
Looking at them side-by-side, the Ford EcoSport is more angular, suggesting faster, sportier cars. The Chevy Trax, on the other hand, is slightly rounder, with curves that remind me of vintage luxury vehicles. Although a decision on a vehicle should not be made based on aesthetics alone, it is important to consider it.
Do we look more professional? Do either crossover seem better equipped for recreation? Depending on your lifestyle, your preferences may change once you think about these differences.
What lies below
When it comes to differences under the hood, the immediate feature that comes to mind is the powertrain. Knowing how the vehicle will need to behave on a regular basis is essential when choosing between the Chevy Trax and the Ford EcoSport. While the 2022 Chevy Trax features a turbocharged EcoTec four-cylinder engine with six-speed automatic transmission, the 2022 Ford EcoSport offers a regular four-cylinder engine with six-speed automatic transmission. Do you really need a turbocharged engine? If you’re like me, then the answer is yes, although “need” is admittedly a strong word. The reason I like a turbocharged engine is that it’s more economical, not relying on natural air pressure to do the job of forcing air into the engine.
While the Trax has a higher torque rating of 177 lb-ft, the EcoSport’s slightly higher output hits 166 horsepower. These are just serviceable ratings, of course, but higher torque is my preference when it comes to starting and stopping city traffic.
Since both come standard with a six-speed automatic transmission, that won’t factor into my decision. I learned on the manual, but I don’t need to have this in every vehicle I buy. And sadly, that’s becoming less and less of an option for American drivers. Another factor to consider is that the 2022 Ford EcoSport only comes with all-wheel-drive, while the 2022 Chevy Trax has the option of front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive, the former being more economical and efficient.
In my opinion, it comes down to preference. Depending on the type of engine and the option you prefer between front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, you may lean more towards the Chevy Trax or the Ford EcoSport. As for me, so far I’m leaning towards the 2022 Chevy Trax.
How much can these two handle?
The big difference between the 2022 Ford EcoSport and other crossover SUVs is that it can tow a bit more than others in its class. Just comparing these two, the 2022 Chevy Trax is capable of towing nearly 1,300 pounds, but the 2022 Ford EcoSport can tow 2,000 pounds, a significant addition of over 700 pounds.
I think my choice here comes down to what I’m going to tow. Do I have to tow 2,000 lbs? Probably not. I’ll probably tow things from time to time, like a small trailer if I’m moving from city to city. But it’s not at the top of my list because I just want to use the space provided in the loading area itself.
However, my friend Robert is a musician and he will probably need a U-Haul trailer (the smallest of which weighs 1,600 lbs when fully loaded) to haul all his guitars, drums, amps, etc. at concerts. Therefore, the Chevy Trax would not be the best option for him.
If you’re debating between these two, do yourself a favor and jot down some quick math; how much towing capacity are you likely to need now or in the future? This way, you will be able to choose the vehicle that suits your needs without suffering an unpleasant shock when your vehicle suddenly becomes incapacitated.
Other considerations on my list of pros and cons are comfort, built-in features, and price. If I’m going to be spending a lot of time in a single vehicle, I want to know that it’s at least somewhat comfortable, especially if I’m going to be performing, lifting, and traveling long distances. I don’t want to drive for six to eight hours and feel exhausted by uncomfortable seats and cramped legroom.
Although the backseat and cargo area might be less comfortable since I’m most likely putting a lever harp, a few suitcases, or some camping gear in there, I need to feel like I’m not crammed luggage in a small space. That’s why the 2022 Chevy Trax appeals to me as a driver, because the driver and front passenger space feels like a road trip’s dream – with such large windows and wider seats, I feel that it would be both comfortable and stimulating.
The seemingly lower and slightly narrower front row of the 2022 Ford EcoSport gave me a bit of a break, but upon further investigation it has quite a bit of cargo space and isn’t as cramped for passengers seated in the back. As for built-in features, I like that the Chevy Trax has both Apple and Android features that come standard, and the option for in-car Wi-Fi is intriguing. The Ford EcoSport does not offer on-board Wi-Fi, but does have Bluetooth compatibility.
When it comes to pricing, the 2022 Chevy Trax is slightly cheaper, but only by a few hundred dollars. Of course, if I was considering going beyond the standard vehicle, that might change my mind. But right now, I’m looking more for durability than luxury.
put it all together
My final thoughts on this: For me, personally, I think the 2022 Chevy Trax is the best choice; but I would again caution that if you’re looking for a sporty crossover like me, it would behoove you to do your research, take them both for a test drive, and then decide which one best suits your lifestyle. I’d also like to note that this is the last year the Ford EcoSport will be produced, so if you want a newer model you might need to find a way to get your hands on one soon.
