These 6 SUVs have great towing power
If you need big towing power and a pickup truck just isn’t practical for you, some great SUVs give you the grunt you need. Most of the SUVs on this list offer three-row configurations to allow more passenger space in the cabin for your large family.
Chevrolet is on the list with Tahoe/Suburban SUVs
You might think the biggest SUVs on the market pull the most weight, but that’s not the case. Chevrolet’s pair of full-size SUVs creaked on the list with towing ratings of 8,400 pounds for the Tahoe and 8,300 pounds for the Suburban. To achieve this towing rating, the SUV must be equipped with a 5.3-liter V8 engine, 2WD configuration and the Max Trailering Package.
Infiniti QX80/Nissan Armada SUVs offer strong towing power
These two large SUVs share a powertrain, which gives them identical towing capabilities. Both use a powerful 5.6-liter V8 engine that develops 400 horsepower. This configuration allows you to tow up to 8,500 pounds. Luckily, that number is the same whether you have a 2WD or 4WD version of either SUV. The only question you’ll have to answer is whether to go for the luxurious Infiniti SUV or the mainstream version from Nissan.
A new Lincoln Navigator makes its weight, and then some
The 2022 version of the Lincoln Navigator is a premium SUV with strong towing capabilities. You can tow a trailer weighing 8,700 pounds with a 2WD version of the Navigator. If you opt for the 4WD model, the towing rating drops to 8,300 pounds, which is still respectable. To tow that much weight, you need the heavy-duty tow package for the Navigator you’ll be driving.
The right Dodge Durango gives you an SUV with great towing power
It might be one of the smallest SUVs on the list, but the Dodge Durango SRT 392 boasts an impressive 8,700 pounds of towing capacity. This model needs the Tow N Go pack to give you that ability, but it’s definitely worth it. If you don’t want the SRT 392 model, the R/T is also capable of pulling the same weight.
Big power coming out of the Ford Expedition / Expedition Max pair
Add the Ford Expedition Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package and you get an SUV with up to 9,300 pounds of towing power in the 2WD configuration. The 4WD version only sheds 100 pounds of capacity, which is pretty good. The Expedition Max can tow up to 9,000 pounds with either configuration. All models of the Ford Expedition use a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine to produce 380 horsepower and give you the strength to pull a heavy load.
Jeep reaches the pinnacle of SUV towing power with the Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer
The biggest Jeep SUVs we’ve ever seen can pull the most weight. The Wagoneer achieves 10,000 pounds of towing using the standard 5.7-liter Hemi V8 and Heavy Duty Trailering Package. According Cars.com, the Grand Wagoneer achieves 9,850 pounds of towing power using the larger 6.4-liter V8 engine. Upcoming 2023 models of this Jeep are expected to tow as much and will have smaller engines, making them more efficient.
With so many powerful SUVs to choose from, which one will be the right vehicle to give you the towing power you need?
