Half of fatal car accidents happen at night
Half of all fatal crashes happen in the dark, according to the IIHS, and more than a quarter of those crashes happen on unlit roads. As you can imagine, headlights are useful on unlit roads, unless you have night vision (and you don’t, unless you’re Count Dracula).
The simple fact that a vehicle has headlights does not mean they are good. Headlights need to be bright enough and even point in the right direction to be optimal. The curve-adaptive headlights are fantastic and help the headlights illuminate the path ahead, even around bends and bends in the road.
To make matters even more complicated, there is no consistency around the rules regarding headlights. This means that headlights can range from mediocre to good (with marginal and adequate in between). Headlight ratings can prevent an otherwise safe vehicle from receiving a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award. By avoiding those SUVs with poor headlights — or at least trim levels — you’ll have a better chance of finding a safer SUV.
