The top 15 intermediaries SUVs are, predictably, pretty awesome. They offer a combination of reliability and value. iSeeCars, an organization that compiled a list of the best vehicles by category, used reliability, value retention, and safety to determine just how great the best midsize SUVs are. Yet not all vehicles have safety ratings. Let’s see why not, and also how safe SUVs with safety scores are.

To compile the list of the best midsize SUVs – and all the lists they compile – iSeeCars analyzed data from over 12 million vehicles. It used information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as well as its own team of data scientists. It also uses the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick awards to determine safety ratings. iSeeCars has conducted Longest Lasting Cars and 5-Year Depreciation studies that helped inform these rankings. Lists are ranked by overall score, but incorporate these three main categories: reliability, value retention, and security.

While some of the midsize SUVs on iSeeCars’ list have varying safety scores, there are quite a few with perfect scores. These include the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe XL, 2022 Hyundai Palisade, 2022 Ford Explorer, 2022 Nissan Pathfinder, 2022 Mazda CX-9, 2022 Volkswagen Atlas, 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, 2022 Subaru Ascent, 2022 Honda Passport, 2022 Chevy Blazer, 2022 Toyota Highlander and 2022 Honda Pilot.

Most of the best midsize SUVs for 2022 have perfect safety ratings, but that doesn’t mean they all do. The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is a perfect example. iSeeCars gives it a safety rating of 8.0. The NHTSA gives it an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars. This includes a 4 star rating for the overall front crash as well as the front driver’s side crash test. The passenger side only has a three-star rating.

Likewise, the 2022 Toyota 4Runner does not have a perfect rating from the IIHS That is. This is not a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ winner. The Toyota 4Runner has a small marginal overlap in the front: driver’s side. This includes a low rating for the structure and the safety cage.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a less than perfect safety rating

The other SUV on iSeeCars list of the best midsize SUVs for 2022 is the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. With an overall rating of 8.3, the Jeep Grand Cherokee ranks eighth on the list. This includes a reliability rating of 8.4 and a value retention score of 7.7. Still, the Grand Cherokee’s safety score is only 8.8. While some versions of the Jeep Grand Cherokee have yet to be tested by NHTSA, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK only gets four stars. This includes four stars for the overall front and front driver’s side ratings. The front passenger side rating is five stars.

Additionally, the IIHS gives the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee a marginal rating for small front overlap: driver’s side and a poor rating for small front overlap: passenger’s side. The headlights are rated just acceptable and mediocre. The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK has the same ratings.

Overall, the best midsize SUVs for 2022 are pretty safe, but that doesn’t mean they’re perfect. If you’re looking for a new midsize SUV, you might want to consider one of the thirteen safest SUVs instead of the two with less than perfect ratings.
