GM Says Vast Majority of Stocked Flint Trucks Now Solid State Shipped to Dealerships
FLINT, MI — Flint-built trucks helped fuel General Motors vehicle sales in the first quarter of this year, with Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra heavy-duty pickups now accounting for more than 40% of that retail market.
GM reported sales results late last week and said improved semiconductor supply supported higher production and market share in the key truck segment.
Semiconductor shortages closed some GM assembly plants, including plants in Flint, late last year and created a traffic jam of unfinished trucks built by Flint Assembly.
The trucks were parked in vacant land off Interstate 75 and elsewhere in the area.
Jack Crawley, a GM spokesman, told MLive-The Flint Journal that over the past few months the company has been able to complete and ship the “vast majority of parked vehicles to our dealerships.” .
Crawley declined to say how many vehicles went through the process of adding missing components, citing competitive reasons.
The spokesman said first-quarter market share figures for GM’s heavy-duty trucks were a segment leader of 41.5% in the first quarter of this year, “representing GM’s strongest quarter in HD retail market share for more than a decade, and up more than 10 percentage points from a year ago.
In a statement from GM, Flint Assembly plant executive manager Ed Duby called the sales numbers “very encouraging.”
“At Flint Assembly, we talk a lot about dominating the truck market, and these numbers certainly reflect that message,” Duby’s statement reads. “We are very proud of the trucks we build, as well as the role our team plays in positively impacting the overall performance of the company. The strong sales numbers speak volumes about the team here in Flint and everyone at GM who helps get these trucks from the factory to our customers.
Flint Assembly, which has approximately 5,600 hourly and salaried employees, was built in 1947 on 159 acres off Van Slyke Road. It is located next to Flint Engine Operations and less than two miles from the Flint Metal Center, the last cluster of auto plants in town.
GM said in a press release that it sold a total of 512,846 vehicles in the United States in the first quarter of this year.
