Do midsize trucks really need a V6?

If you’re shopping for a mid-size truck, you might be wondering which engine is best in a pickup truck. Traditionally, trucks have been equipped with larger displacement engines because they are able to generate power at lower revs. When it comes to full-size trucks, for years most wouldn’t buy a model without a V8. But, as motor technology has evolved, smaller motors can now generate significant power. So if you’re shopping for a mid-size truck, should you buy a truck with a V6 engine, or is a four-cylinder good enough?

Many midsize trucks still offer a V6

Manufacturers understand that most buyers probably want the perceived reliability and power of a V6 engine. That’s why models like the Toyota Tacoma, Chevy Colorado, and GMC Canyon all have V6 engines available. In fact, the 2022 Nissan Frontier now comes standard with a 3.8-liter V6 across the lineup. Thus, some brands have yet to add small turbocharged engines to truck models.

Another truck that also comes standard with a V6 is the Honda Ridgeline. But, this truck hasn’t always been a best-seller, even though it receives accolades from critics and journalists.

The Ford Ranger marked a change for mid-size trucks

Notably, the Ranger does not yet offer a V6 engine. In the future, this may change, but currently this pickup only has a turbocharged four-cylinder. That 2.3-liter engine produces legitimate power, though. It offers 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. By comparison, the Frontier’s V6 develops 310 hp.

Powertrain options for the 2023 Ranger could change, however. Rumors have been swirling that Ford will equip their midsize truck with a V6 turbodiesel engine, but this engine option may not be available in the US market. And it’s a slight disappointment for sure.

Which midsize truck is the best?

According consumer reports, The 2022 Honda Ridgeline is one of the best new trucks on the market. That might be a little shocking, as the Ridgeline generally lags behind other trucks in terms of sales. The Ridgeline is notable because despite being a unibody truck, it still has a standard V6 engine and a number of other conveniences.

One of the most interesting features of the Ridgeline might be its in-bed audio system. It has nothing to do with the powertrain, but the system literally turns this truck’s bed into a giant speaker. And it’s great for things like tailgating or camping.

That said, if you’re shopping for a body-on-frame truck, something like the new Frontier or Tacoma may be a better option if you want a pickup with a V6. Both of these trucks have long been popular with the general public, and the 2022 Frontier has brought noticeable improvements in terms of sales. The Frontier does not offer a four-cylinder engine, unlike the Tacoma. So it’s possible to get things like better fuel efficiency from the Toyota.
