Chevy and GMC may have off-road heavy-duty trucks in development

General Motors has been rolling out some badass off-road trucks lately. Chevy released a new halo model, the Silverado ZR2; GMC has put the crab-walking Hummer EV SUT into production and unveiled the new Sierra 1500 AT4X, which has been converted into the ultimate Overland Expo land vehicle. And it seems the company has no intention of stopping there.
We don’t yet know if we’re getting a full-fledged competitor to the F-150 Raptor/Ram 1500 TRX; we’ll see what happens with the concept formerly known as the Beast. But the people of GM Trucks have spied on what appear to be two new off-road ready HD trucks that are likely to get Chevy ZR2 and GMC brand AT4X.

Spy photos show some distinct ZR2/AT4X type features. Camouflage covers a high-clearance front bumper over a visible skid plate. Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires are visible. The Silverado HD ZR2 prototype displayed a green diesel sticker; the 1500 ZR2 only comes with the 6.2-liter V8 gasoline engine.
Heavy trucks – designed for towing and hauling – are not premium off-road vehicles. But adding off-road capability and style to the HD lineup is a no-brainer. Off-road treatments are extremely popular, although fewer off-road buyers at a level where it makes a difference. The expansion of the ZR2 and AT4X brands would give Chevy and GMC legitimate competitors for Ford Super Duty’s Tremor off-road package and the Ram 2500 Power Wagon.
Chevy and GMC have yet to confirm the existence of either truck, let alone when they will arrive. But it’s a safe bet that trucks will make an appearance with the HD lineup’s mid-cycle refresh for 2024.
