5 fastest trucks of 2022 according to TrueCar
NASCAR drivers and supercar owners aren’t the only ones who want to go fast. Whether you drive a Mini Cooper or a heavy truck, you love hitting the gas and hurtling down the highway. And if you fall into the latter category, TrueCar has compiled a list of this year’s fastest trucks.
1. 2022 GMC Hummer Electric
TrueCar’s full list has 20 trucks. But if you’re interested in the fastest of the fast, consider a 2022 GMC Hummer EV. It’s no surprise that an EV made it to this list, as the inherent design of EVs allows them to accelerate from 0 at 60 mph faster than the average gasoline vehicle. But maintaining those speeds consistently over long distances is where most EVs fail compared to their gas-powered counterparts. That makes the Hummer EV’s inclusion at the top of this list all the more impressive.
Although it starts at six figures, the 2022 Hummer EV, with its three-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain, can hit 60 mph in 3.0 seconds flat. A MotorTrend The road test notes that the Hummer EV maintained a 105.4 mph pace for 11.7 seconds. Don’t forget: this sturdy model weighs nearly four and a half tons. This speed is blazing for a truck of this size.
Range is still a question for electric vehicles today. But this GMC model can go 350 miles on a full charge, which is pretty competitive. Due to its weight, the Hummer EV doesn’t get much fuel economy – around 47 MPGe. However, if you’re looking for one of the fastest trucks of 2022 (and can afford the six-figure MSRP), start with the Hummer EV.
2. Ram 1500 2022
The 2022 Ram 1500 will also meet your need for speed. Don’t expect 0-60 mph acceleration in 3.0 seconds. But the fastest Ram 1500 model in the lineup, the TRX, will get you there in just over four seconds. According Car and driver, it will also reach a top speed of 118 mph. This four-wheel-drive version features a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 developing 702 hp. And even with this high-end version, you’ll still be paying tens of thousands less than a Hummer EV.
You can also get around fairly quickly with the 5.7-liter V8, which pairs with rear-wheel drive or 4WD. This 395 horsepower motor can hit 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and maintain high speeds for long periods of time.
You won’t have to worry about range anxiety either. The 2022 Ram 1500 gets a respectable 17/23 mph city/highway with the V8. And while you’ll pay more for gas than for charging the Hummer EV, chances are you won’t think much of it when you’re cruising down the highway.
3. 2022 Ford F-150
Another classic makes this ist. The 2022 Ford F-150 is a perennial favorite for its reliability, performance and towing capacity. That’s why it’s the best-selling full-size truck, and its options are so comprehensive, it’s hard to go wrong.
But how fast is the 2022 Ford F-150? That’s fast enough for the police department. 2021 models have been tested for use by the Los Angeles Police Department. In tests, Ford F-150s hit 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and 98.19 mph in 14.44 seconds. A separate Michigan State Police test confirmed the F-150’s top speed to be 120 mph.
That’s certainly fast for a full-size truck. Based on this testing and interest, Ford began deploying purpose-built F-150s to police fleets nationwide. And if it’s fast enough for law enforcement to catch speeders and suspects, the F-150 deserves your attention.
4. Toyota Tundra 2022
The 2022 Toyota Tundra lands at number four on this list. And as Car and Driver notes, its top speed is around 106 mph. It’s not a number worthy of a supercar, but it’s fast enough for the segment.
Like the other fast trucks on this list, the Tundra must balance speed and weight to ensure it can haul heavy payloads and torque to take advantage of high towing capacity. As a result, full-size trucks are usually long and heavy. Although they can generate considerable power, their driveshafts are not designed or configured to spin fast enough to generate very high speeds, as they must also allow high levels of torque.
Still, TrueCar gives the Tundra high marks not only for relative speed, but also for affordability, fuel efficiency, ride quality and infotainment features.
5. 2023 Nissan Titan
The 2023 Nissan Titan rounds out the top five and deserves praise for its affordability and available options. It is also the fastest truck in the Nissan lineup. The 2019 model can hit 60 mph in just seven seconds and boasts a top speed of 122 mph.
Not only is it a fast truck, but it also handles relatively well and has a decent selection of advanced safety and infotainment features. It’s not the most fuel-efficient, but again, most full-size trucks aren’t. A Nissan Titan EV would be around the corner, which could offer more mileage for your money. But until then, the 2023 Nissan Titan is a respectable choice purely for speed.
TrueCar’s list of this year’s fastest trucks names many other models, including the 2022 Ram 2500 (#8), 2022 Toyota Tacoma (#9), and 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTD (#15). Some less popular trucks, like the 2022 Chevy Colorado (#6), also get higher rankings in the roundup. It’s worth checking out if you want your next truck to boast not just towing prowess, but speed too.
