3 Used American Pickup Trucks to Avoid, What to Buy Instead
Let’s face it, the amount of used American trucks on the market can be confusing. These trucks were made in the United States by brands like Chevrolet, Ford, and GMC, but failed to live up to expectations. In contrast, the buy-in-place option is a better-used American pickup truck alternative.
Forget the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado if you want a used American pickup truck
Edmunds thoroughly reviewed the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado and found a few positive attributes. The gasoline V6 and four-cylinder diesel engines offer more towing capacity than their rivals. It also turned out to be quite maneuverable. However, it just wasn’t one of the best years for the Chevy Colorado truck. It tended to give owners trouble and wasn’t the most comfortable for an everyday vehicle. This makes it one of the best used American pickup trucks to jump for 2017.
Edmunds called it “largely utilitarian”. Chevrolet built the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado in Wentzville, Missouri during the Wentzville Assembly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it a four-star safety rating.
Current price range: $20,900 – $35,998
What to buy instead: 2017 Ram 1500
The 2017 Ram 1500 is one of the highest rated trucks of that year for Edmunds. It has a slightly higher price tag but makes up for it in engine choices, interior comfort and ride quality.

The 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 saw new, more fuel-efficient engine choices and an upgraded interior. Edmunds says GMC redesigned the Sierra 1500 for 2014, which turned out to be a downside for this pickup. Although the Sierra was not known for its reliability, the redesign proved to temporarily worsen the situation.
Owners reported issues with the transmission and the tow numbers weren’t up to par with the competition. However, it was built at the Fort Wayne, Indiana Assembly Plant, making it a used American truck to skip. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave this truck “good” ratings in its crash tests.
Current price range: $17,484 – $35,990
What to buy instead: 2014 Toyota Tundra
Granted, the 2014 Toyota Tundra isn’t an American truck, but what it lacks in American parts it makes up for in reliability. It also has many configuration options for engine, cabins and trim levels.
The 2018 Ford F-150 fails in a few areas
Ford built the 2018 Ford F-150 at its assembly plants in Dearborn, Michigan, and Claycomo, Missouri. Edmunds says there are positives to the 2018 F-150, like the high tow count and the abundance of technology. However, the ride is a little more difficult than necessary for this year. It also lacks in the area of fuel economy compared to other vehicles, making it a part of the list of used American pickup trucks to skip.
Although the aluminum body panels were a good experience, these turned out to have higher repair costs down the line. The IIHS awarded the 2018 F-150 the Top Safety Pick award.
Current price range: $24,998 – $62,495
What to Buy Instead: 2018 Ram 1500
Edmunds thinks the 2018 Ram 1500 is a better-used American pickup truck for this year. It offers many trim levels and packages, such as the all-terrain Rebel 1500.
The good news is that used American pickup trucks only get better with age.
