2022 Subaru Outback, Crosstrek and Forester sell impressive number of new SUVs

This is the six-month point of the 2022 sales year, and we can get an idea of the quality Subaru’s SUV lineup with sales of the 2022 Subaru Outback midsize SUV, Crosstrek subcompact SUV and Forester compact SUV against the most popular SUVs. The 26 best-selling SUVs of 2022 include the Outback at number twelve, the hot Crosstrek at number fifteen, and the Forester, the twenty-third best-selling SUV in the first six months of 2022.

The Subaru Outback is Subaru of America’s best-selling model and outperforms an impressive number of competitors. The Outback outsells the Ford Escape, Toyota 4Runner, Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Bronco, Kia Telluride and others.
The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is the second-best-selling model from the Camden, NJ-based automaker, and tops an equally impressive number of popular SUVs. Crosstrek outsells the Toyota 4Runner, Ford Bronco Sport, Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Bronco, Kia Sportage and Kia Telluride.
The 2022 Subaru Forester is Subaru of America’s third best-selling model and outperforms the GMC Terrain, Kia Telluride and Honda Pilot.
What sets Subaru SUVs apart from the competition?
Along with 8.7 inches of ground clearance and standard all-wheel drive, the Outback, Crosstrek and Forester feature X-Mode for optimal all-weather performance. Outback XT and Wilderness, Crosstrek Sport and Limited, and Forester Sport and Wilderness come with dual-function X Mode for added off-road performance.

With gas prices above $4.00 per gallon for regular unleaded, Outback, Crosstrek and Forester get excellent fuel mileage.
Fuel consumption of the 2022 Subaru Outback
The EPA fuel economy rating for the 2022 Outback XT 2.4-liter turbo is 23/30 mpg city/highway and 26 mpg combined. Estimated fuel economy for the standard 2.5-liter engine is 26/33 mpg city/highway and 29 mpg combined.
The EPA says the new 2022 Outback Wilderness gets about 22/26 mpg city/highway and 24 mpg combined. The 2021 Outback XT with the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine gets an EPA estimated 23/30 mpg city/highway and 26 mpg combined.

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek with the larger 2.5-liter boxer engine comes with 30 more horsepower and gets an EPA-estimated fuel mileage of 27/34 mpg city/highway and 29 mpg combined.
The 2021 Crosstrek with the 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder engine gets an EPA estimated 28/33 mpg and 30 mpg combined.

The 2021 Subaru Forester compact SUV comes with standard all-wheel drive and scores an estimated combined EPA of 29 mpg and 26/33 mpg city/highway. The Forester is equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder boxer engine.
It was a difficult year for Subaru and other automakers to have enough new vehicles to sell to their customers. Even with the microchip shortages and supply chain issues, Subaru has produced enough 2022 Outback, Crosstrek and Forester SUVs to overtake an impressive number of competitors from Toyota, Ford, Honda, Hyundai and Kia.
What’s next for the 2023 Subaru Outback, Crosstrek and Forester? The 2023 Subaru Outback is getting a partial facelift and arriving in US showrooms this fall. The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek remains unchanged except for a new special-edition trim level and arrives this summer. Subaru hasn’t announced the 2023 Forester, but it’s expected to arrive this fall unchanged. Stay tuned.
